At Pinvin C of E Academy, our history curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity about the past and develop pupils' understanding of how people, events and societies have shaped the world we live in today. Through studying history, children gain a deeper understanding of their own place within the local community, the wider world and the rich story of human development over time. We encourage pupils to appreciate the diversity, achievements and experiences of different people and cultures throughout history, helping them to become thoughtful, informed and respectful citizens.
Our history curriculum is guided by the CUSP (Curriculum with Unity Schools Partnership) History Curriculum, which is carefully sequenced to develop both substantive and disciplinary knowledge from Early Years through to Year 6. The curriculum is structured to ensure that historical knowledge is built cumulatively, enabling pupils to revisit, deepen and connect their understanding over time. Through engaging and challenging learning experiences, children develop a secure understanding of significant events, people and civilisations from the local area, Britain and the wider world.
Through their learning, pupils explore recurring historical themes and concepts, helping them to make meaningful links between different periods of history. These themes deepen pupils' understanding of how societies have changed and developed over time and support them in recognising connections across their historical studies.
Alongside their substantive knowledge, pupils develop disciplinary knowledge by learning how historians investigate the past and construct historical interpretations. Children are encouraged to question, analyse and evaluate historical evidence, helping them to understand how our knowledge of the past is formed and how different interpretations can emerge.
From Early Years to Year 6, pupils progressively develop their understanding of the following disciplinary concepts:
Rooted in our Christian vision and values, history provides opportunities for children to develop wisdom through learning from the experiences of people in the past and reflecting on how historical events continue to shape modern society. Through hope, pupils explore how individuals and communities have overcome challenges and driven change. By promoting respect, understanding and appreciation of different cultures, beliefs and experiences, we encourage children to value diversity and recognise their role in shaping the future.
Our aim is for every child to leave Pinvin C of E Academy with a secure understanding of the past, a curiosity about the world around them and the knowledge and skills to think critically about how history influences the present and the future.
